Diabetes is a group of metabolic diseases that leads to a high blood glucose level due to inadequate insulin production or body cells not responding to insulin or both.

Diabetes patients often become increasingly thirsty and hungry. Four most common types of diabetes are type 2 diabetes, Type 1 Diabetes, prediabetes, and gestational diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes is a chronic condition in which the body’s ability to process blood sugar is affected. Around 90% cases of diabetes are type 2 diabetes.

When the pancreas produces a little or no insulin, it is called Type 1 Diabetes.

Both type 2 and Type 1 Diabetes are chronic conditions.

If the blood sugar is at a high level but not high enough to be called type 2 diabetes, the condition is called prediabetes. 1 out of 3 people residing in the United States have prediabetes and huge populations of those are unaware of it.

Gestational diabetes is a form of high blood sugar that affects pregnant women.

Over 30 million people in the United States alone live with diabetes. Due to the availability of better medication and treatments, diabetes patients are now able to lead a loner and better quality of life.

The most common diabetes symptoms are frequent urination and thirst, intense hunger, weight gain, unusual weight loss, increased fatigue, irritability and Blurred vision.

Another important symptom of an individual having diabetes is when cuts and bruises do not heal properly or quickly.

Sometimes high levels of blood sugar reduce your ability to recover from infections. Women with diabetes find it difficult to recover from the bladder and vaginal infections.

Frequent gum infection, swollen gums, itchy skin and sexual dysfunction in men could also be signs of diabetes.

Diabetes patients are at a higher risk of cardiovascular diseases need to monitor their cholesterol levels and blood pressure regularly.

Since diabetes can directly affect your heart, it is important to choose a healthy diet that is low in Salt. Diabetic patients should consult a dietitian to make a healthy meal plan.

Being overweight is also a risk in diabetes. Walking is the best exercise to keep weight in check and prevent a heart condition.

Smoking is also not recommended for diabetes patients as it also places you at high risk for a heart condition.

Diabetes patients are recommended an A1C test twice a year to determine their average blood glucose level for the past 3 months.
